LED lighting is an easy way to lower your energy costs!

No matter how much money that you make, or what kind of economic conditions that we’re experiencing, it never hurts to figure out ways to save money. We all certainly enjoy our utility services, but we also know that most of us could do a little more than we’re currently doing to spend less. This includes weatherstripping, insulation, a programmable thermostat, and taking shorter showers. And if you haven’t already made the upgrade to LED lighting, you’re missing out on significant energy savings!

Our team at Gary Houston Electric is always a phone call away if you have any questions about energy efficiency, and we’re always happy to come see you and make some specific recommendations for LED light fixtures for home usage. LED light bulbs are a little more expensive than conventional incandescent or compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs, but can provide the same amount of light for a fraction of the energy. For example, a 7-10 watt LED bulb can produce as much light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb. And LED lighting installation is as easy as installing a conventional light bulb.

One important change that we’re all going to have to get used to is the concept of no longer using wattage to describe the light output of a bulb. Watts are actually a measure of the amount of energy required to power up a light bulb, but have incorrectly been used to describe light output, which is measured in lumens. The development of the LED as a home lighting source has enabled manufacturers to produce the same light output that consumers and businesses have been accustomed to for years, while reducing the amount of billable kilowatt-hours required to power them.

There are many other advantages to using LED lighting. Most LED bulbs have a life expectancy of five years or more, and will pay for themselves over time. They also produce little to no heat, so there’s no fire hazard, or risk to your children if they get tipped over!
