As homeowners, one thing that we all have in common is a love for our electronic devices. Between our computers, televisions, cable boxes, and gaming systems, our electronics are the way that we stay entertained and connected. Unfortunately, most homes don’t have enough outlets to plug everything in, which is why power strips are so useful.

If you want to keep your home safe, it’s a good idea to schedule a safety inspection, and if you’re ever looking for an electrician, search sites like Angie’s list or the Better Business Bureau to make an informed decision. Be sure to also ask any company that you’re considering for recent references. Our team at Gary Houston Electric is proud to be one of Arkansas’ leading residential electrical contractors, and if you ever have any questions about electric repair or safety, we’re always a phone call away. We stand behind every service call, and are always prepared to do whatever it takes to turn you into a repeat customer! We also have a few easy recommendations on ways to stay safe when you’re using power strips in your home:

Purchase power strips with surge protection-During an electrical storm, your electronics are particularly susceptible to damage from a power surge. Unfortunately, many of your bargain power strips are simply line splitters. Spend a few extra dollars on quality power strips, and keep your electronics safe!

Only plug power strips into grounded plugs-If your home still has 2-prong outlets, they should be replaced right away.

Use in a well-ventilated area-Keep your plugs away from carpets and drapes, and be sure to pull desks and entertainment centers away from the wall so that air can circulate. Most power strips have a built-in circuit breaker for overloads, but it’s always a good idea to err on the side of caution.

Avoid plugging in high-wattage devices-Electronic devices use a very small amount of wattage, but other devices like space heaters and power tools should always be plugged directly into the wall.
