Use power strips safely-The power strip has become a standard component for several rooms in the house. Computers and entertainment centers all require a lot of plugs in one place, and power strips come in handy. But some offer surge protection, and some do not. Be sure to get what you need, and follow the instructions. During the fall and winter, we like our space heaters, but they should never be plugged into a power strip, surge protection or not.

Install Grounded and GFCI outlets-Most homes built after 1964 have grounded outlets, but there are exceptions. Replacing them is relatively easy, and very inexpensive. Be sure to switch off the main breakers if you’re installing the outlets yourself, and be realistic about your DIY abilities. The modest savings on an electrician aren’t worth your family’s safety if it’s not a job you can do on our own. Be sure to also install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in kitchens and bathrooms.

Resolve longer-term problems-Electrical wiring should be inspected at least every 25 years. Switches or outlets that don’t work should be safely disconnected and removed.
