Summertime is officially in our rearview mirror, and we’re in store for a few short weeks of nearly perfect weather before we’re forced to deal with freezing temperatures in The Natural State! Many older homes are challenging to keep warm when the mercury drops, and newly built homes often have a few energy efficiency issues that need to be addressed immediately. Gary Houston Electric has been Little Rock’s most trusted residential electrician since 1978, and we proudly offer in-home energy efficiency consultations to help homeowners lower their bills!

Utility providers are free to raise rates as they see fit, and the only way homeowners can fight back is by reducing their energy consumption. The good news is that there are several easy and effective ways to “tighten your belt,” and we love helping our customers save money. Here are a few easy and effective ways to start lowering your usage right away, and we’re a phone call away whenever you’re ready to schedule an in-home consultation.

Install a programmable thermostat—If programmed correctly and used consistently, a programmable thermostat can help you lower your energy bills by up to 10%. Additionally, new Smart thermostat models provide energy usage reports to help you estimate your upcoming bills, and they can be programmed remotely using your smartphone or mobile device!

Reduce heat exchange around doors and windows—it’s easiest to notice drafts when the outside temperature drops, and a few rolls of inexpensive adhesive weatherstripping can make a significant difference. And if you’re considering installing new windows or adding storm doors, the IRS currently offers tax credits for qualified energy-efficient home improvements made before 2032.

Replace older appliances before they break down—HVAC units have an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years, and water heaters should be replaced every 8 to 12 years. Many units will continue to operate for many years beyond their anticipated lifespan, but they’ll also become predictably less energy efficient. Replacing an older unit now enables you to enjoy immediate energy savings and spares you the hassle of replacing it in an emergency!
