Three easy electrical safety tips for your new home
There’s nothing more exciting than buying a new home, and it’s the single most important investment you’ll ever make! The average homeowner looks at eight or more properties before making an offer, and you owe it to yourself to leave no stone unturned to find the most suitable home for your family’s needs and budget. But it’s a good bet that your “new to you” home needs a few electrical safety upgrades, and our team at Gary Houston Electric is here to help!
We’ve proudly offered trusted residential and commercial electrical service in Little Rock since 1978, and we’re available 24 hours a day when you need emergency service! We’re always available when you’d like to schedule an electrical safety inspection, and our experienced technicians will be happy to make specific recommendations. We can also usually find ways to help you reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills! Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to move in:
Have your wiring professionally inspected. Household wiring should be inspected at least every 25 years or sooner if you encounter flickering lights, frequently tripped circuit breakers, or blown fuses.
Replace outdated outlets. If your home was constructed before 1969, there may still be a few remaining two-prong outlets that need to be replaced. As an additional safety measure, you’ll also need to install ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors. GFCI outlets are a must anywhere in your home where electricity is used near water, and they automatically trip within 1/40 of a second after detecting a current imbalance!
Upgrade your lighting and appliances. A new home lighting system offers a lot of bang for your home improvement buck, and Smart LED bulbs allow you to adjust lighting color and intensity in each part of the home to suit your mood. A programmable thermostat can make a significant difference in your monthly utility bills, and newer Bluetooth-enabled thermostats even allow you to keep track of your family’s usage and make adjustments on the fly, all using your smartphone or mobile device!
