Keeping your family safe is always of the utmost importance, and it starts at home. That means staying on top of necessary repairs, ensuring that you keep batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and replacing your fire extinguisher once it reaches its expiration date. And you can’t afford to forget about electrical safety!

Our team at Gary Houston Electric has been providing residential electrical services in Little Rock since 1978, and your family’s safety is always our number one priority! Give us a call when you’d like to schedule an in-home inspection, and we’ll make specific safety recommendations. We’re also happy to give you a quote for a KOHLER backup generator so you can keep the lights on no matter what happens outside. Here are a few easy electrical safety tips to protect your family all year long:

Home Wiring-Home wiring needs to be inspected at least every 25 years or before you begin any remodeling projects. Be sure to also schedule a professional electrical inspection before you purchase an older home and get multiple estimates for any repairs that will be necessary to ensure the home meets today’s electrical safety standards.

Electrical Outlets-It’s easy and inexpensive to replace outdated two-prong outlets, and you can also install extra outlets with built-in surge protection in your home office living room to accommodate all of your electronic devices; power strips are perfectly safe to use with electronic devices, but you should never use them to plug in power tools or space heaters. Contact an electrician if you need to replace or remove any non-functional electrical outlets or light switches in the home, and be sure to install outlets with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in your kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors.

Appliances-If you have any outdated appliances that are approaching the end of their operational lifespan, replacing them now spares you the hassle of scheduling emergency repairs later. New appliances offer the most current safety features available, and you should also see significant energy savings right away.

If you have any questions about home electrical safety or would like to schedule a service appointment, contact us online or at 501-375-8330.
