When it comes to household electrical safety, you owe it to yourself and your family to be proactive. Most newer homes are built to very strict safety standards, but older homes might not have been built to those same standards, and may need some updates. Whatever the case, it can be very dangerous to assume that you don’t have any problems. That’s why you need to call an electrician every few years to make sure that you’re doing everything that you can to prevent electrical fires, frequently tripped breakers, and other problems.

Our team at Gary Houston Electric has been in continuous operation since 1978, and we’re always a phone call or mouse click away any time that you need us. We’re familiar with the electrical problems that are common in older homes, and know how to fix them quickly, and at a price that you can easily afford. Contact us any time to schedule an onsite household inspection, and also be sure to consider the following basic safety tips:

Wiring-Household wiring should be replaced about every 25 years, and much sooner if you have an older home with wiring insulated with rubber or cloth.

Electrical Outlets-Every outlet in your home should be a grounded three prong outlet. If you still have the older two prong outlets, replacing them is very affordable, and much safer than using adaptors. Outdoor outlets and the outlets in your kitchen and bathrooms should be Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets with built-in circuit breakers.

Furniture and household devices-Be sure to keep furniture and drapes clear of your outlets, and be careful not to overload your outlets by plugging high wattage devices such as space heaters and hair dryers into power strips.

If you have any questions, or would like to schedule service, contact us online, or give us a call at 501-375-8330.
