2 Most people know to ask for references, but the key is actually checking them. Not only should you speak with past clients to obtain specific information about the contractor’s performance, try to look at finished and even ongoing projects if possible.

3 It’s commonly advised to get at least three written bids or estimates using the same specs so you can accurately compare costs and get a feel for the contractor’s approach to the job. Beware of substantially lower bids, because it likely means a mistake has been made or all of the work wasn’t included.
