Some families take long road trips to visit theme parks and see relatives, and The Natural State is also one of the world’s best places to enjoy a “staycation!” And no matter what you choose to do this summer, it’s crucial to take all necessary safety precautions!

Your household wiring should be professionally inspected at least every 25 years, or sooner if you’re encountering problems such as flickering lights or frequently tripped breakers. There are also several easy things you can do on your own to keep yourself and your family safe this summer:

Be careful using electronics near water—Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets help prevent electric shock in areas where moisture is common, and you should have them installed in your kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors. Be sure to test your GFCI outlets at least once a month, and keep all electrical devices at least ten feet away from pools and hot tubs. And if you frequently use the pool, a waterproof radio or Bluetooth speaker is a must!

Use the right type of extension cords—You should never use indoor extension cords outside, even during dry weather conditions. A few heavy-duty outdoor cords are a great long-term investment, and you should always keep them handy so you’ll be ready for spontaneous outdoor cookouts! And if you’re using window air conditioners or other heavy appliances in your home, they should only be plugged into grounded wall outlets.

Take the proper precautions when doing yardwork—Be sure to inspect your lawnmowers, electric saws, and trimmers for broken casings and frayed wires before each use, and always use hearing and eye protection. And whenever you’re carrying ladders, pool skimmers, or other long items, always stay at least ten feet away from overhead power lines.
