Fall is finally here, and we’re all looking forward to some much-needed relief after one of the hottest summers in Arkansas history. We might not get many white Christmases in The Natural State, but we can always count on weather-related power outages each winter, as well as an ice storm or two. Energy costs also predictably skyrocket when outdoor temperatures drop below freezing, and the only truly effective way to lower your bills is by reducing your consumption. The good news is that our team at Gary Houston Electric is always a phone call away, and we love helping homeowners save money!

We’ve proudly provided trusted residential electrical service in Little Rock since 1978, and we’re available around the clock. Whether you’ve recently experienced a sudden spike in your utility bills or you’re just interested in “tightening your belt,” an energy efficiency audit is an excellent way to identify problem areas in your home. There are also several easy things you can do on your own to lower your bills:

Get your comfort systems tuned up—HVAC companies frequently offer preventive maintenance plans that can pay for themselves with your first service visit, and many utility companies also offer free annual tune-ups to their customers. Be sure to also regularly replace your air filters and vacuum the dust from your intake vents and registers.

Seal up drafty doors and windows—It’s easier to notice drafts once it starts getting cold outside, and those drafts force your comfort systems to run longer to maintain your desired indoor temperature. ENERGY STAR-rated windows can help you lower your bills by up to 12%, and the IRS currently offers tax credits for qualified energy-efficient home improvements made before 2032. And if the cost of new windows exceeds your current budget, inexpensive adhesive weatherstripping can also make a significant difference!

Use oil-filled space heaters—Oil-filled space heaters are a highly effective way to warm individual rooms, and they’re also much safer than fan-forced heaters. Keep them on a stable, well-ventilated surface to prevent tipping, and plug them directly into the wall, not a power strip.

If you have any questions or want to schedule an in-home electrical safety inspection, contact us online or at 501-375-8330. Be sure to also ask us for a free, no-obligation estimate for a KOHLER emergency backup generator!
