What permits do I need to acquire?
You’ll typically need to file a building permit if you’re expanding, but even if you’re not making changes to the physical exterior of the property, it can’t hurt to do some online research and make some phone calls to confirm what’s required in your county, city, or neighborhood.
What professionals will I need to hire for this project?
The next step is to make sure that you hire the right professionals to take care of your carpentry, plumbing, and electrical construction. Do your research with the Better Business Bureau, or with online websites such as Angie’s List, and don’t be afraid to ask for recent references. When you’re hiring multiple contractors, be sure that they’re on the same page before the work begins. Contractors often have certain specialty areas, but are accustomed to coordinating with other contractors to ensure that each part of the project works according to plan.
