We’ve sprung forward, and the daffodils are in bloom: it must be springtime! After the punishingly cold winter that we just had, Arkansans are all breathing a sigh of relief as the days start to get longer, and the sun sits high in the sky.

We’ve got another Arkansas Winter bearing down on us, and power outages are inevitable when temperatures drop, especially when we get a significant snow or ice event.

There are many places in the world that are well known for their extreme weather during certain times of year. Whether you’re dealing with Nor’ easters in New England, Monsoons in Mumbai, or Tsunamis in Tokyo, there are always certain times of year when the locals watch the weather forecast with nervousness, and wonder if they’re going to be lucky enough to once again escape Mother Nature’s wrath.

Summer is winding down, and it won’t be long before we’re in the middle of another brutal winter. As any Arkansan will tell you, we live in a place that is certainly no stranger to extreme weather, and with it comes the inevitable power outages. They’re certainly inconvenient for everyone, but for the elderly and for people who need power for medical equipment, they can sometimes be a matter of life and death!

In Arkansas, Mother Nature can be unforgiving at times. The Natural State is no stranger to tornadoes, tropical storms, blizzards, heatwaves, and droughts. If there’s a weather extreme to be had, we get it sooner or later.

Electricity has only been widely available for a little over a century, but it’s truly amazing how much that we’ve come to depend on it for our safety, comfort, and recreation. It’s equally amazing how inconvenient that most of us find it when the power goes out, even if only for a couple of hours. All Arkansans know that during the spring, a beautiful sunny day can suddenly turn into a raging flash flood, and in some cases, much worse.
